Writing is Re-Writing

It seems like any story of any length is being re-written. The characters you've planned and worked out through endless character development sheets decide to go another way once the novel gets going.

Your main character decides that a part of their history went down the path less traveled in the short story compared to the history you gave in the novel.

Another character that may have provided some sort of connectivity to that one particular reader but due to little seeable character development.

And the younger brother to your main character had a good twist in his story line, but that may change depending on how this most recent re-write may change the novel's plot once again.

All these characters who have in the course of writing and re-writing this one book have decided on their own accord how they wanted the events of their world to go. Yes, you've plotted out in several different ways from using different software programs to the low tech way of 3x5 index cards sorted in a little file folder.

Scrivner is a good software program, and it's offered to the participates of a world wide month long event named Nation Novel Writing Month; the details I may go deeper into in a future entry. Usually the program's offered at a discount rate to those participates who had "won" the writing month event.  As for the 3x5 index cards, I like a little bit better. I can sort the cards into the file folder how I like, usually by the city and then where in the city the scene is taking place with what characters are in that scene. The 3x5 cards give me that ability to physically hold my novel and to change around the individual cards if I feel like one scene would fit better elsewhere.

No matter how the novel works out, it will be another tally mark on the 'writing is re-writing' board.
